National Registry of Historic Place

There are some protecting regulations by National Register of Historic Places. Historic Properties, Definition For Title I purposes, properties that qualify as historic properties are landmarks, districts, sites, buildings, structures or objectives which

  • They are listed in or eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places,

  • They are certified as historic properties by the Secretary of the Interior for purposes of the Economic Recovery Tax Act or related Federal tax laws, or

  •  They are listed in a State or local inventory of historic places, or

  • They are designated by State law or local ordinances as a State or local landmark or historic district.

The Pepperell Mill and Mill Village Historic District is historically significant under Criteria A in the areas of industry and community planning and development and C for architecture as it illustrates the impact of the textile industry on the City of Opelika, as well as, the textile industry's establishment of mill villages in Alabama and the development of a distinct community centered in the mill village. 

A. That are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history.

C. That embody the distinctive characteristics of a type, period, or method of construction, or that represent the work of a master, or that possess high artistic values, or that represent a significant and distinguishable entity whose components may lack individual distinction.
